Early History of Turtleneck Sweaters
Turtleneck sweaters are also called polo neck (in United Kingdom) or skivvy (in Australia). The main idea of such name is the high collar, which envelops neck.
The history of first turtleneck sweaters refers to 15th century or earlier. But actually there is no one exact theory of appearance. Some sources say that it was created in 1890 in England not to become cold while driving bicycle. And also photos dated 1890 were found which pictured the hockey players also in turtleneck sweaters.

Sailors, Navy and Noel Coward
The greatest spread of turtleneck sweaters was made by sailors. I guess it is because of the necessity to make sailor work outside even in cold weather. And that’s how sailors spread this comfortable clothes.
In World War II turtleneck sweater became the part of official uniform of United States Navy.
Turtleneck sweaters became really popular in 1920s; in those times Noel Coward was wearing them. (Noel Coward was an English playwright, composer and designer)
Types of Turtleneck Sweaters
In the world exists great amount of different turtleneck sweaters types. Among them the most simple is mock turtle neck. The collar goes up, doubles up, but both sides are sewn to the neck.
In another type of turtleneck sweater the length of collar can even obtain your ears. So when you wear this type the collar just falls up in little bit careless way, but this brings more interesting look in whole your style.
Universal Nature of Turtleneck Sweaters
Obviously turtleneck sweaters can be worn by men and women and also by children. The main advantage of such clothes is the possibility not to wear scarf in chilly weather. You can just put on convenient turtleneck sweater and not to worry about becoming freeze.

Of course very important feature of turtleneck sweaters is the tissue from which it is done. The diversity of tissues is really amazing. You can choose natural cotton, wool or plush, and of course it is not all diversity of tissues, but as for me these are the best.
